How and why
I’m Russell Wangersky. I’ve been a Canadian writer, columnist and editor for decades. I write newspaper columns, editors, newsletters, magazines and books — eight of them now.
But because of the world of publishing, very few of my own works fully belong to me. I own the copyright on several books, and in some cases, have recovered other publishing rights. But I like the idea of writing something that’s my own, where I can put work that doesn’t fit the traditional form of newspaper columns, fiction, or non-fiction books.
My plan is a modest one: I hope to post once a week, though good intentions often wreck on the reefs of work schedules. At the moment, this project will be free: one day, if it gains traction and interest, it might move to be paid for at least some posts.
The posts will include my own photography. The writing will primarily be a form of colour writing about nature, history, life and the places I find myself in — I’d give you an example here, but, as I said, others own the rights to my non-book-work and almost certainly wouldn’t let me reproduce it here. Sometimes, it may include Canadian politics. Sometimes, larger issues. Sometimes, it may even include (clearly identified) fiction.
In some ways, this first newsletter is a bit of a placeholder: just enough to tell you what you might see in the future, in case you’re interested in giving it a whirl for a few weeks or months to see if it suits you. I hope it will, though I’ll warn you that I’ve written columns on everything from moss to mushrooms, from the Nevada desert to abandoned Saskatoon homesteads.
Hope to see you again.
Looking forward to seeing more of your musings 👍
